The City of Birmingham, MI (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector to work in the Community Development / Building department. Under the supervision of the Building Official, the Plumbing Inspector conducts a wide variety of highly responsible technical and professional duties requiring a specialized knowledge of plumbing and mechanical codes, City Codes and Ordinances, and department policies procedures and operations. Work is performed under general supervision of the Building Official.


General duties include but are not limited to performing plumbing and mechanical plan reviews, answering calls and requests for information, inspecting existing plumbing installations, issuing ordinance citations, and assisting with FOIA requests. This position requires frequent professional interaction with the public and independent work under established protocols and guidelines.


Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent, supplemented by college coursework in related curriculum required. Must possess certification, or the ability to qualify for provisional certification, under State of Michigan Act 407, as plumbing inspector, mechanical inspector and plan reviewer for both trades.
  • Strong working knowledge of current computer programs, including, but not limited to: BS&A, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when appropriate; work effectively with the public and staff at all levels; and communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • International Code Council certification as a Residential Plumbing Inspector (Possession at time of hire, or attainment within 6 months from date of hire).

Schedule and Wages:

  • This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm.
  • Hourly rate schedule is from $28.57. Up to 5 qualifying certifications paid out at $.50/hour per certification.
