Position Description

The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Seasonal Public Works Inspector for the 2024 construction season.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Engineering, this seasonal position will include inspection of road, sidewalk and underground utilities construction projects, preparation and recording of engineering sketches and inspection reports, and other related duties.

The Engineering Department is responsible for a number of operations throughout the City of Birmingham, managing approximately 85 miles of streets, 101 miles of water mains, 2 elevated water storage tanks and serves approximately 8,500 water service customers. Additionally, the department oversees the administration of EGLE permits and requirements nd the Rouge River watershed including Quarton Lake.

Necessary Skills:

  • Knowledge of inspection of road, sidewalk and underground utilities and construction projects.
  • Ability to prepare and record engineering sketches and inspection reports.
  • Experience working with contractors.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to represent the City with contractors and the general public.
  • Ability to work with construction inspection related software for daily reporting.

Requirements:

  • High school Diploma, or equivalent, plus additional education in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, or a related field.

  • Two (2) years of experience in Civil Engineering and/or Public Works Inspection, including installation for sewer, water main and street paving projects.

  • A combination of relevant work and education experience will be considered.

  • Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions

  • Must have transportation and be able to transport between offsite work locations (mileage reimbursement provided)

  • Must have access to a mobile phone
