POSITION PURPOSE:

The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Electrical Inspector. Under the supervision of the Building Official, reviews electrical plans submitted to the Community Development Department for the installation of electrical wiring and equipment in new and renovated buildings. Duties are performed independently according to established procedures and guidelines. Priorities are set and special assignments are made. Special project assignments are made by the Building Official who is consulted on policy questions and unusual situations. Performs a wide variety of duties including housing inspections and new business inspections, issues ordinance citations; answers telephone calls and requests for information, and performs miscellaneous job related duties. This position is covered by the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees Local 988.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reviews plans submitted to the Community Development Department for installation of electrical wiring and equipment. Check plans for compliance with specifications listed in the City, National, and State codes. Inspects plans for proper wiring layout, grounding, protective devices, installation, and overloading. Approves or lists discrepancies to be corrected before approval is given.
  2. Inspects the installation of electrical wiring and equipment in new and renovated buildings. Insures that construction conforms to plans and specifications. Insures that construction conforms to safety regulations of the City, National, and State codes. Issues code violations for corrective action. Involves the Building Official in the more serious violations.
  3. Performs housing inspections and new business inspections. Inspects housing to meet minimum electrical requirements when requested by the owner. Orders corrective work according to deficiencies found in the inspection. Performs electrical inspection prior to a new business opening. Orders corrective action as needed.
  4. Issues ordinance citations. Issues citations in the event that corrections are not performed as ordered for electrical violations. Assists City Attorney in the preparation of cases. Appears as a witness in court actions involving electrical citations.
  5. Answers telephone calls and requests for information. Advises homeowners, contractors, architects and consultants concerning technical matters. Meets on building site with those who request information when appropriate.
  6. Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Journeyman license is required
  • Master license is preferred
  • State of Michigan Act 407 certified to perform electrical inspections and plan reviews
  • A minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience. Experience with public contact preferred.
